Father Taras Kinash
M.A. Religious Studies and Philosophy, Current Dean of our Parish
📖Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.” — John 12:26
The service of Fr. Taras shows his devotion to Christ and his love for people.
Since April 2022, Father Taras Kinash has served as Parish Priest at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Ottawa, offering spiritual care through worship, pastoral counselling, community outreach, and youth programming. He is devoted to building a strong Orthodox Christian community while also nurturing Ukrainian cultural life in Canada’s capital.
Born in 1985 in Nyzhankovychi, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine, Father Taras showed an early devotion to the Church, serving as an altar boy for five years before entering seminary. In 2006, he graduated from the Ivano-Frankivsk Orthodox Seminary, and in 2011, earned a Master’s degree in Religious Studies and Philosophy from the National University of Ostroh Academy. His formation was enriched by the Canada World Youth Exchange Program in Saskatchewan, where he volunteered with Indigenous children and participated in Canadian-Ukrainian parish life.
Ordained to the diaconate in July 2015 and to the Holy Priesthood in September 2015 by His Beatitude Metropolitan Epiphanius of Kyiv, Father Taras first served in Tetiiv, Kyiv Oblast. There, he guided a parish of nearly 200 faithful, established a children’s choir, co-directed summer Orthodox camps, and organized volunteer outreach to seniors and the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
His growing ties with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada led to an invitation in 2019 to study an orientation course at St. Andrew’s College in Winnipeg and serve in parishes across Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In 2022, with the support of the UOCC and the Ukrainian Embassy in Canada, he and his family relocated to Ottawa. The next day, he celebrated his first Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral.
Beyond his parish responsibilities, Father Taras serves as a spiritual counsellor with Ottawa Ukrainian Mental Health, and as chaplain to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He is regularly called to offer prayers at governmental and cultural events, representing both his Church and the Ukrainian community. Many individuals turn to him for support and spiritual guidance, reflecting his compassion and accessibility as a pastor. Committed to lifelong learning, Father Taras continues his education and professional development to serve more effectively and respond to the growing needs of his community.
Father Taras is married to Dobrodiyka Olha Kinash, PM, MA in Public Relations, who now serves as Communications Director and Sunday School Director of the Cathedral. Together they are raising two children: Matvii, an altar server, and Anna. Their family life is closely tied to the mission of the Church, with each member contributing to parish and community life.
Today, Father Taras is recognized as a dedicated priest, counsellor, and community leader who unites theological training, pastoral leadership, and public service in his ministry, working tirelessly to strengthen faith, community, and hope for Ukraine.

Father Ihor Okhrimtchouk
We remember with love Fr. Ihor Okhrimtchouk, a faithful shepherd who served with compassion and devotion for us for 18 years.
📖 “And I heard a voice from heaven saying, ‘Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ ‘Blessed indeed,’ says the Spirit, ‘that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!’”
— Revelation 14:13
Eternal Memory!
As parish priest at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Ukrainian Orthodox Church since May 2002, Fr. Ihor Okhrimtchouk has provided spiritual care to members of our parish through group lectures, discussion groups and one-on-one counselling. He is passionate about building both a strong Orthodox Christian and Ukrainian cultural community in Ottawa. Born in 1970 in Lanivtsi, Volyn, a village in western Ukraine, Fr. Ihor completed secondary school there and later enrolled in Ternopil Polytechnical Institute prior to conscription in the army of the Soviet Union in 1988.
After completing military service, Fr.. Ihor immigrated to Canada in December 1990 and began theological studies in Winnipeg at the Faculty of Theology, St. Andrew’s College, University of Manitoba, eventually completing a Bachelor of Theology degree. Along with theology, Fr. Ihor took courses at the University of Manitoba in management, economics and computer science.
Fr. Ihor was ordained to the diaconate in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada in 1996 at the Dormition of Theotokos Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Surrey, B.C. Three years later, on October 10, 1999, he was ordained to the Holy Priesthood of the UOCC at the All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Transcona, Manitoba. Between 1999 and 2002, Fr. Ihor held pastoral assignments with St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Portage La Prairie, MB and with Holy Ghost Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Brandon , Manitoba. Father Ihor’s pastoral identity has been strongly influenced by the mentorship of many clergy, lay organizations and laymen and women of the UOCC and other Orthodox clergy as well as clergy from other denominations and faith traditions.
A fervent believer in continuing education, Fr. Ihor completed a Bachelor of Computer Science at the University of Manitoba in 2001, and a Bachelor of Education at the University of Ottawa in 2006. He has since completed graduate courses in theology, pastoral care, community dynamics and development at St. Paul University in Ottawa, where he is currently a candidate for a Master of Arts in Counselling. Fr. Ihor is a member of the steering committee of the Ottawa Interfaith Council as well as being a registered member of the Ontario Teachers College. He is frequently called upon as a representative of the Orthodox faith at interdenominational venues in Ottawa.
It was also at St. Andrew’s College, University of Manitoba, where Fr. Ihor met Jennifer Atamanchuk, a fourth-generation Ukrainian-Canadian, and a student at the University of Manitoba. On July 22, 1995, Ihor and Jennifer were married at St. George's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Dauphin, Manitoba. Since their marriage dobrodiyka Jennifer assists Fr. Ihor in many volunteer capacities within the church. Currently, she plays an active role in youth and cultural programming at the church.
