The Ewashko Singers presents a unique choral event, Slava Bohu!: A Retrospective of Ukrainian Sacred Choral Music, on February 18, 2012, 8:00 p.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 174 Wilbrod Street in Ottawa.
Laurence Ewashko, Associate Professor of Music at the University of Ottawa, Choral Consultant for the NAC and Chorus Master for Opera Lyra Ottawa, has moulded the Ewashko Singers into a select, flexible, semi-professional chamber choir that performs a wide range of classical and modern repertoire. As part of his sabbatical year, Professor Ewashko, who is of Slavic descent, conducted archival research in Ukraine, where he discovered a treasure trove of choral masterpieces. Slava Bohu! (Glory to God!) is an opportunity to experience works never heard before in Ottawa. The program will include concerti by Vedel and Brotniansky, cantatas by Kudryk and Dekhtiarov, and repertoire from the early period of the Soviet occupation of Ukraine. From the very first rehearsal, choristers knew that the sublime, evocative beauty and spiritual reverence of these forgotten gems will make this an unforgettable experience. The Ewashko Singers will record this program for a CD release in 2013.
With support from his Ukrainian colleagues, Professor Ewashko is also leading a transliteration project to make 4 volumes of Ukrainian Choral Music accessible to non-Slavic choirs. His goal is to publish the material online with accompanying sound bites and pronunciation guides. The volumes will be available to the general public by 2016, the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada.
The public is warmly invited to join us for this exciting concert, which will take place at St. Joseph's Church, 174 Wilbrod Street (corner of Cumberland) in Ottawa on Saturday, February 18, 2012, at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $22 in advance, $25 at the door, and $15 for students and seniors. Advance tickets are available at The Leading Note (370 Elgin Street) and from chorus members. Proceeds from this concert will go to the St. Joseph's piano fund.
